Why primary care research?
In recent years, evidence-based medicine has become the cornerstone of medical practice. Primary care practitioners are expected to provide evidence-based care to our patients. However, majority of the clinical evidence were generated from secondary and tertiary care settings. This is in sharp contrast to the fact that most health care contacts occur in primary care setting. Hence there is an urgent need to promote and conduct research in primary care.
Why Malaysian Primary Care Research Group (MPCRG)?
Expertise, time, funding and ongoing motivations are required to produce quality research. Most primary care practitioners will find this difficult to achieve. Moreover, many primary care practitioners were not formally taught on research methodology in medical schools. Recognizing these problems and the need for primary care research in both public and private primary care settings, MPCRG under the auspices of Academy of Family Physician Malaysia was formed in September 2004.
Objectives of MPCRG
- To unite primary care researchers.
- To explore the prioritized area of research in primary care.
- To disseminate ideas of research and encourage research in primary care.
- To facilitate young researchers to learn about research in primary care.
- To disseminate and share resources of research and funding.
- To act as a platform where local researchers can meet and present their work.
- To encourage primary care research publications.
- To build capacity in primary care research.
- To improve quality of patient care and implement best evidence in practice.
Activities of MPCRG:
- Regular research meetings have been organized with various research-related
topics, including:
- 19th September 2004: “Research Methodology”
- 5th December 2004: “Writing a good research proposal”
