PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Message from the President

Dear Members,

The 7th Asia Pacific Primary Care Research Conference APPCRC that was held on the 27th-29th June 2019 at the Bayview Hotel Penang was a successful event that saw the participation of more than 100 delegates from both local and overseas. I must congratulate Prof Khoo Ee Ming, Prof Ng Chirk Jenn and A/Prof Verna Lee and their teams for bringing MPCRG to its current reputable status. I am proposing a more sizable fund to be placed under MPCRG so as to allow it to widen its activities and increase the participation of our members.

The results of the recent Conjoint MAFP-FRACGP examinations revealed a significant improvement in the pass rate. 46 out of 75 candidates passed, which includes 11 out of 18 GPs whilst the rest are from the primary care doctors in the Ministry of Health. Currently, 166 GPs have successfully passed the examination. We hope to see more GPs graduating in the future.

Credit goes to the Chapter of Teachers led by Dr Lily Zuryani, whose commitment and sacrifices in teaching their mentees resulted in the tremendous improvement in the pass rate this year. There will be a greater focus on capacity development and skills enhancement of the Chapter of Teachers so as to ensure that our current and future candidates will receive more personalised and in-depth guidance so as to be better prepared to undergo the Conjoint MAFP/FRACGP professional examinations.

It is also our hope that members who have recently passed will come forward and volunteer to join the Chapter of Teachers and assist our colleagues in their courses. It will be to the benefit of our patients if we can produce more family medicine specialists who will be able to serve the country as is the current policy of our Minister of Health, YB Datuk Seri Dr Haji Dzulkefly bin Ahmad.

Concurrently, AFPM is finalising an alternative structured pathway called the Practice-Based Assessment programme for senior members of more than 20 years in general practice as well as for those who have exhausted their attempts in the ATFM and Conjoint Part 1 and 2 examinations.

On the international front, we look forward to the upcoming GP19 RACGP conference in Adelaide scheduled from the 24th-26th October 2019. There will be significant representation from AFPM members, considering that we have had a long-standing cordial relationship with our sister college from Down Under. We will also be meeting up with our Malaysian family physician colleagues who are practising in several communities in Australia.

" THE FUNCTION OF LEADERSHIP IS TO PRODUCE MORE LEADERS, NOT FOLLOWERS "
