URGENT: Abu Dhabi Council and conference postponed by 12 months
After significant discussions with key players, and after consultation with Executive, Member Organizations and others, Executive have reluctantly had to take the decision to POSTPONE the Abu Dhabi Council and conference by 12 months. The event will now take place in November 2021. Linked to this, the Sydney Council and conference has also been postponed from 2022 to 2023. Further details can be found here.
Our President, Dr Donald Li, has co-authored an editorial in the latest British Journal of General Practice.
“Community engagement is the first line of defence in the battle against infectious diseases. Yet there are international differences in the actions, response, and empowerment of the population in building a firewall against the deadly COVID-19 virus. …… COVID-19 tests our capacities to be kind and generous, and to see beyond ourselves and our own interests. These qualities have been brought forth readily for the people of Hong Kong, who have had such a painful experience with SARS in the past”.

Mental Health in COVID-19
Mental health has never been a more pressing concern for us in primary care, as we have to deal with the combined impacts of the COVID-19 infection itself, of quarantine and social isolation, and the inevitable severe economic downturn that follows. Our colleagues in the WONCA WP on Mental Health have highlighted two papers that may help:
A paper from the BMJ, by Mohammad Razai and colleagues, on how to reduce the psychological effects of social isolation: https://www.bmj.com/content/bmj/369/bmj.m1904.full.pdf
The WHO Mental Health and Substance Use team has launched a mental health and psychosocial support platform to help the people cope better with stress related to COVID-19. This has three sections: a questionnaire to assess your current stress levels; guidance on exercises to relieve stress and promote resilience; and contact of resources (most useful for Eastern Mediterranean region)
