Dear Members of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia (AFPM),

It is with deep humility, a strong sense of responsibility, and renewed commitment that I address you as President of AFPM for the term April 2026 to April 2027. I am grateful for the trust placed in me and mindful that this role is not one of authority alone, but of stewardship — to uphold our Constitution, serve our members, and advance the discipline of Family Medicine for the benefit of our patients and communities.

AFPM stands on a proud legacy of leadership in education, advocacy, and professional excellence. As primary care continues to face unprecedented challenges — rising non-communicable diseases, workforce pressures, digital transformation, and changing patient expectations — the role of Family Physicians has never been more vital. This term, our collective task is not merely to respond to change, but to shape it responsibly and ethically, in line with AFPM’s constitutional objects.

Welcoming the Next Generation

To our new trainees, welcome to the Academy.
You are entering a discipline at the very heart of healthcare. Family Medicine is more than a specialty — it is a calling grounded in relationships, continuity, and comprehensive care.

At AFPM, you will be supported by dedicated mentors and educators committed to your growth as clinicians and future leaders.

This journey requires:

  • Self-direction

  • Discipline

  • Lifelong learning

Each of you brings unique strengths and aspirations. You have earned your place here, and you belong. Our graduates have gone on to serve with distinction nationally and internationally, across both public and private sectors, as clinicians, educators, and leaders. Having begun my own journey in 2008, I remain committed to guiding and shaping the next generation of family physicians.

Once again, welcome to the Academy. I look forward to meeting you and walking this journey together.

Education and Innovation: Integrating AI in Primary Care

Education remains the cornerstone of AFPM’s mission. In this term, I have identified Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Primary Care Education and research as a flagship priority — not as a technological fascination, but as a professional necessity.

AI is already influencing diagnostics, clinical decision support, documentation, and population health management. Our responsibility as Family Physicians is to understand its strengths, limitations, ethical implications, and appropriate use — always preserving the human, relational core of primary care.

AFPM will therefore develop a structured AI education framework, pilot CPD activities, and support faculty development, ensuring our members are equipped, not displaced, by technology.

Strengthening Governance and Professional Standing

Strong organisations require strong governance. Early in the term, we will engage Council and committees in strategic planning to ensure clarity of direction, measurable outcomes, and transparent reporting. Committees remain the engine of AFPM, and this term emphasises alignment, support, and accountability rather than centralisation.

Our professional standing is also reflected in how we engage with the world beyond our borders. AFPM will continue its active participation in international platforms, including WONCA and RACGP, strengthening regional collaboration, sharing best practices, and positioning Malaysian Family Medicine confidently on the global stage.

Royal Patronage and Institutional Respect

AFPM is honoured to have Royal Patronage, which symbolises our contribution to national health and professional integrity. During this term, we will uphold all protocols with respect and diligence. President'sSuch engagements reinforce AFPM’s reputation as a disciplined, respected, and values-driven professional body.

Community, Advocacy, and Public Interest

Family Medicine exists at the interface of individuals, families, and communities. Beyond clinics and hospitals, AFPM has a duty to advocate for strong primary care systems, preventive health, and equitable access to care.

This term will see continued community and advocacy initiatives, particularly in areas of non-communicable disease prevention, health literacy, and responsible use of digital health tools. We will also strengthen partnerships with community organisations and NGOs, recognising that continuity of care extends beyond the healthcare system alone.

Private Sector

Reclaiming the Value of the Family Physician

Trained Family Physicians today manage multimorbidity, mental health, preventive care, geriatrics, palliative discussions, digital consultations, and community-based follow-up — often in a single encounter. Yet remuneration models have failed to evolve accordingly.

Professional respect must be reflected not only in titles, but in systems, contracts, and policies.

Investing in the Future

No presidency is complete without preparing the next generation. AFPM will expand engagement with young doctors and trainees, foster mentorship, and strengthen leadership pathways. Sustainability is not about programmes alone, but about people — ensuring that AFPM remains relevant, resilient, and member-driven long after this term ends.

A Shared Journey

AFPM is not its President, Council, or committees alone. It is a community of dedicated Family Physicians who serve daily with professionalism, compassion, and quiet excellence. I invite every member to journey with us — to participate, to question, to contribute, and to lead where you are.

Together, grounded in our Constitution and united by our purpose, let us continue to strengthen Family Medicine for Malaysia — today, and for generations to come.

With respect and commitment,

DR. S. KAVIYARASAN A/L SAILIN @ STALIN

24th President
