It is with profound sadness that the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia mourns the passing of Associate Professor Dr Chandran Rajagopal—a distinguished Family Physician, inspiring leader, dedicated educator, mentor, and dear friend. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of Family Medicine in Malaysia.

Dr Chandran's life was defined by service, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. He graduated from Madras Medical College, University of Madras, in 1972 and began his medical career in the Malaysian Health Service, where he served in the fields of psychiatry and general surgery. He subsequently served his nation as a Captain and Field Medical Officer in the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces for two years, a period that reflected his discipline, dedication, and commitment to public service.

His pursuit of postgraduate education began later than many of his contemporaries, but once embarked upon, it became a lifelong journey. In 1984, he undertook postgraduate training in Reproductive Medicine, followed by Genitourinary Medicine in the United Kingdom. Between 1986 and 1988, he completed advanced training in Dermatology at the Institute of Dermatology in Bangkok and with the British Postgraduate Medical Federation in the United Kingdom. Never content to stop learning, he continued his subspecialty training in Dermatological Surgery at the American Academy of Aesthetic and Restorative Surgery in New Orleans, Louisiana, under the renowned Professor George Farber. He was awarded Fellowship of the Academy and was subsequently recognised as an International Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, reflecting the international esteem in which he was held.

For more than five decades, Dr Chandran devoted his life to caring for patients, advancing medical education, and strengthening our profession. His unwavering commitment to lifelong learning, clinical excellence, and compassionate service earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues both in Malaysia and internationally. Although he was widely recognised for his expertise in dermatology and aesthetic medicine, those who knew him best understood that his heart always belonged to Family Medicine and to the patients and doctors he so faithfully served.

On a personal note, I had the privilege of knowing Dr Chandran for many years. I first worked closely with him when I served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Academy during his tenure as President. I witnessed firsthand his visionary leadership, calm wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the Academy. Later, we had the pleasure of serving together as faculty members of the Graduate Certificate in Family Medicine programme, where I came to know him not only as an exceptional teacher, tutor, and mentor, but also as a trusted colleague and a good friend. He was always generous with his knowledge, patient with his guidance, and ever willing to encourage younger colleagues to strive for excellence.

Dr Chandran's greatest legacy lies in the countless primary care doctors with a special interest in dermatology whom he trained, mentored, and inspired. As a teacher, trainer, examiner, curriculum developer, and mentor, he devoted many years to strengthening postgraduate education within the Academy. He was instrumental in developing the Academy's Certificate in Dermatology and Primary Care Dermatology programmes and worked tirelessly in collaboration with the Institute of Dermatology, Bangkok, to raise educational standards. His dedication has shaped generations of Family Physicians and primary care doctors who continue to provide high-quality care throughout Malaysia and the region.

His service to the Academy was exemplary. As President of Council, he provided thoughtful and principled leadership during important years of the Academy's growth, always placing the interests of the profession and its members above his own. His vision helped strengthen the Academy's reputation as the nation's leading institution for Family Medicine education, training, and professional development.

His influence extended well beyond our borders. He was a respected speaker, advisor, examiner, and international collaborator, contributing significantly to the advancement of dermatology, aesthetic medicine, and patient safety. In recognition of his distinguished service to the nation and the medical profession, he was conferred the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) and the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM).

I had one of the greatest privileges of my professional life when I was given the honour of reading the citation for the conferment of the Academy's Honorary Fellowship upon Associate Professor Dr Chandran Rajagopal. The Fellowship—the highest honour bestowed by the Academy—was presented by our Royal Patron, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir. Although he was already frail and attended the ceremony in a wheelchair, he accepted the Fellowship with the same dignity, humility, and quiet grace that characterised his entire life. It was a deeply moving moment that I will always cherish. I am profoundly grateful that the Academy was able to honour him during his lifetime for his immense and lasting contributions to Family Medicine, medical education, and our profession.

Today, we remember not only his remarkable achievements but also the man behind them—his kindness, humility, generosity, gentle humour, and unwavering commitment to helping others succeed. He inspired not through words alone, but through a lifetime of dedicated service, unwavering integrity, and a genuine passion for teaching and healing.

On behalf of the Council and members of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia, I extend our deepest condolences to his beloved family, friends, colleagues, former students, and the many patients whose lives he touched.

Dr Chandran may no longer be with us in person, but his legacy will continue to live on in the Academy he helped build, the countless doctors he mentored, the patients he cared for, and the generations of Family Physicians who will continue to benefit from his life's work.

Thank you, Dr Chandran, for your visionary leadership, your enduring friendship, your generous mentorship, and your lifelong service to Family Medicine. Your legacy will continue to inspire us, and you will always hold a special place in the history of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia.
