Quality Improvement Program (QIP)
for Postgraduate Training in Family Medicine
under Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia

QIP Introduction

Quality Improvement Program (QIP) is the formative workplace-based assessment conducted in ATFM Year 1 and Year 2. Periodic workplace-based formative assessment is now an essential aspect in medical training as it enables the trainer to assess the trainee in the actual workplace with real patients. It is also helpful to identify gaps and weaknesses for feedback and rectification. Hence the main objectives of the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) are for formative assessment, training and feedback using case-based discussion and precepting of students’ consultation during the Practice Visit.

Practice Visits 1 & 2

There will be two Practice Visits: one each in ATFM Year 1 and Year 2.

  • The Practice Visit is the Precepting session where the QIP Practice Assessor will observe the trainee in FOUR (4) patient consultations. This can be done face-to face or over a virtual platform.

  • The QIP Practice Assessor will undertake the Practice Visits.

  • All QIP Practice Assessors are mentors who are trained and certified in QIP Practice Visit Assessment.

  • The Practice Visits will preferably be undertaken by the trainee’s own mentor, who can then continue to monitor trainees’ progress at the monthly mentor-mentee meetings.
