Workplace-based Assessment (WBA) for Postgraduate Training in Family Medicine under Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia (previously known as Quality Improvement Program (QIP))

WBA Introduction

Workplace-based assessment (WBA) conducted in ATFM Year 1 and Year 2. Periodic assessment is now an essential aspect in medical training as it enables the trainer to assess the trainee in the actual workplace with real patients. It is also helpful to identify gaps and weaknesses for feedback and rectification. Hence the main objectives of the Workplace-Based Assessment are for formative assessment, training and feedback using case-based discussion and precepting of trainees’ consultation during the Practice Visit.

Practice Visits 1 & 2

There will be two Practice Visits: one each in ATFM Year 1 and Year 2.

  • The Practice Visit is the Precepting session where the Practice Assessor will observe the trainee in FOUR (4) patient consultations. This can be done face-to face or over a virtual platform.

  • The Practice Assessor will undertake the Practice Visits.

  • All Practice Assessors are mentors who are trained and certified in Practice Visit Assessment.

  • The Practice Visits will preferably be undertaken by the trainee’s own mentor, who can then continue to monitor trainees’ progress at the monthly supervisor-trainee meetings.
